Rohingya Refugees, Malaysia
Being employed under the Qualitas Medical Group (Qualitas), I had the privilege to join fellow colleague, and passionate humanitarian and photographer, Dr. Junaidi bin Ismail to spend an afternoon amongst the Rohingya Community in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In 2016, Qualitas, along with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), launched a nation-wide programme in Malaysia to provide affordable primary healthcare services for refugees. The first of its kind, the programme provides subsided and fixed-price primary healthcare for refugees all over the country.

The Rohingya people are a Muslim  minority ethnic group with refused recognition by the Myanmar Government.  Often described as one of the most persecuted people on earth, they lack legal protection and face strong restrictions and hostilities. 78% of the Rohingya families in Myanmar live below the poverty line & face discrimination because of their ethnic heritage.   It is suggested that the Myanmar government are in the final stages of an organised process of genocide against the Rohingya community.

In Malaysia, the number of registered Rohingya refugees  are approx.  56,000 and a further estimated unregistered to be in excess of 40,000.  These refugees have limited access to basic services, including the right to work and essential health and education services. Many are at risk of exploitation, and detention and this deepens the profound sense of insecurity and trauma that accompanies their forced displacement
